Disk OperationsThe problem is simple. To discuss Disk Utility, we'll approach it from twosides: the disk imaging aspect and disk repair features. DiskUtility (path: /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) can still be usedto create disk images and repair volumes, and has gained a few additionalfeatures as well. A prompt will appear informing you about the space sharing option that APFS volumes provide, but click on the Partition option. In Panther, Apple has combined its two disk-related utilities≽isk Copyand Disk Utilityinto a single application (still named Disk Utility). Launch Disk Utility and select the drive in the sidebar, then click on the Partition button. As for external drives, that can be used in three main file formats: Mac OS Extended, MS-DOS (FAT), and ExFAT.Please turn off hard drive, and connect it to Mac OS via supplied usb cable 2. I gave the disk a name, and left it at the default, 'Mac OSX Extended (Journaled)' and the default security to just erase the disk.Format HDD to EXFAT under Mac OS 1. I plugged it in, turned it on, and opened disk utility. And LG OLED TVs do.I'm trying to format a new external (USB) hard drive (Seagate, 250 Gb) to be Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format.
To use Disk Utility to work on your primary disk, follow these steps:4. If you only intend to work with a secondary disk or partition, launchDisk Utility from the Finder. Aswith Mac OS 9, you cannot use either of these functions on your startuppartition. Pls follow step 1 then step 2(ExternalErase)Disk Utility combines disk repair with disk formatting and partitioning. Disk Utility Format For Lgtv Mac OS X Install CDIf you only intend to work with a secondary disk or partition, launch Disk Utility from the Finder.Start (or restart) your Macintosh while holding down the C key.Choose Open Disk Utility from the Installer application menu. After launching Disk Utility, the application opens to display a list of yourdisk resources in a pane on the left side of the window, as shown in Figure3.56. As with Mac OS 9, you cannot use either of these functions on your startup partition. Example: If the drive is called 'NO NAME', directly above that, you should see the drive capacity of 'XXXX'.Insert your Mac OS X Install CD into your computer.Disk Utility combines disk repair with disk formatting and partitioning. Select the capacity of the drive respective to the one containing the device you wish to format then click the Erase tab. On the left side of the window are the drives connected to the computer. Editor like dji go for macA disk that supports S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology)status. Although most of this information is self-explanatory, ofinterest is the S.M.A.R.T. Each button opensa pane that performs a different function within the application, as you mightguess from their names. At the bottom of the Disk Utility window is a display of the details of theselected disk object. Grayed outpartitions are system partitions that do not contain files that you can verifyor repair. When a disk is selected, up to five button bar selections appear in thecontent area: First Aid, Erase, Partition, RAID, and Restore. In addition to basic diskrepair, the First Aid tools can also fix any file permissions that mayaccidentally have been changed while using your computer.Figure3.57 Use Disk First Aid to repair damaged volumes. To check or verify a disk, select the disk and partition from the volume listat the left of the window. Unfortunately, Disk First Aid is not capable of repairing extensivedisk damage, so third-party utilities such as Micromat's Drive 10 andTechTool Pro( )are still important parts of every software library. It functions on UFS, HFS+, and HFS volumesmeaning that you canrepair both types of Mac OS X partitions and both types of Mac OS 8/9partitions. First AidThe First Aid pane, shown in Figure 3.57, can perform basic repair operationson a drive. If you choosea partition, you do not see the partition controls because you can'tvery well partition a partitionnor can you apply RAID settings to apartition and so on. If youchoose a disk, for example, you see all the control areas. ![]() Shown in Figure 3.59, this is the control center for working with your drive. PartitionTo create a more complex drive layout, use the Partition pane. I'd recommend trying another disk repair toolbefore resorting to such desperate measures. If you want to securely erase the volume, click the Options button to forceDisk Utility to zero all data on the drive and write random data over the driveeight times.See Chapter 2 for more information on why multiple writes are required for asecure erasure. Finally, click Erase to remove all existing information from the device andinstall the selected filesystem. ![]() It offers no faulttolerance.Level 1 Disk mirroring≼reates a fault-tolerant system bycreating an exact mirror of one drive on another drive.Level 3 Disk striping with error correctionThis RAID typeuses three drives: two operating identically to level 0, and a third containingerror correction information for fault tolerance.Level 5 Striped data and error correctionRAID level 5 offersthe best balance between performance and fault tolerance.Unfortunately, Panther only supports Level 0 and Level 1 in software.RAID capabilities are easy to configure if you have multiple drives within amachine. To set up a RAID set, drag the icons of the drives to add to a set from thevolume list to the RAID pane's disk listing. Four common types of RAID areavailable:Level 0 Disk stripingThis increases I/O speed by reading andwriting to multiple drives simultaneously. By using drives performing inparallel, the computer can write and read information from the RAID set at amuch higher rate than a single drive. RAIDRAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a collection of multipledrives that function together as a single drive. Rather than create an archived folder, developers write theirapplications to a virtual disk that is loaded into memory when used. Disk ImagingDisk images have become a common and convenient way to distribute softwarefor Mac OS X. After selectinga disk or partition from the list, you can choose to Mount (Option-Command-M),Unmount (Option-Command-U), or Eject (Command-E) the volume. Additional Disk OperationsThe toolbar contains options for unmounting/mounting volumes. Apple has provided excellent step-by-step instructions forusing asr and disk images to clone computers for classroom/workplaceenvironments.Rather than repeat those here, use man asr from the command line andread the section entitled "HOW TO USE ASR." Read more about thecommand line starting in Chapter 12. For the end user it is a simple way to work with new applications.
